Mid-Election Publicity, Clearing the Air or Both

It's not every day I get to ask a politician whether they snorted cocaine off a hooker's bosom.

But I guess that's my lot in life today at Helena Guergis' news conference.

I'm actually kind of looking forward to it, since Guergis was so feisty with me when I interviewed her recently on 97-7 The Beach.

Now, Guergis didn't send me the documents she managed to get from the Prime Minister's office about the allegations that led to her being fired from the caucus. She sent them to the CBC, and Peter Mansbridge dutifully made them the top story last night.

The way the story has gone so far, it does keep alive questions about her treatment at the hands of the PM.

Several people I know claim they'll vote for Guergis strictly because they feel she got short shrift. Some of them claim she could have done pretty much anything wrong if only she'd been a man, or had married someone else.

Others say Guergis could have done anything she wanted and stayed in caucus if only she'd been a good Minister, or a good member, for that matter.

Oh, elections, so fun, bringing out the very best in all of us.

  1. It's hard not to be in the corner of someone wrongfully treated and abused. Everyone likes the underdog and we also champion causes and come to the defence of someone unjustly picked on. In my opinion, she had been elected by her public, and without any concern for what the public wanted....she was ousted by the PM out of office and out of the party. Where is the democracy and "open book" policy the Liberals always profess to be offering the public. It's as bad as taking her out back and the PM and a few of his henchmen beating and kicking her when she's down. I'm hoping the public will rush to her aid and not elect the replacement the PM and his goons have thrown us for his party seat. Go Helena ! ( and here's to all others who have been wrongfully treated and strung up by dictators ) cheers ... we will rise again and laugh.

  3. "Wrongfully treated and abused"? Come on. Youtube and other internet sites are full of her
references to her behaviour. Did you forget that her now unemployed husband was using her Taxpayer funded office and Blackberry to lobby his own business,? Did you forget the Brenda Martin affair in Mexico, where Canada had to send Jason Kenney down there to patch up the mess she had left? Did you forget the PEI affair? Did you forget that her office had the LARGEST turnover of staff of any Cabinet Minister in history? She was the author of her own downfall, and it should be remembered that the event this morning was completely staged, as she was the one who furnished the letter to Mansbridge. How long has she been sitting on that letter? FOI requests usually take weeks, not months, so to assume she received it in the past few days is ludicrous.

  4. You make all the points that the PMO didn't make. If her dismissal from caucus was due to poor performance then state it categorically. If there were issues that meant she would not be a member in good standing for the PC party, why is there an arbitrary ousting when the process to become the party candidate for a local riding is so drawn out and democratic? How hard is it for the PM to just deal with members of his party with candid, open honesty and have that clearly conveyed to her constituents to decide if they made a wrong choice. Instead, he's martyred her.
